World No Tobacco Day

23rd April 2024

May 31st 2024 is World No Tobacco Day.

The Secret is out: the Tobacco industry targets the vulnerable

Tobacco and related industries must continuously find new consumers to replace the ones that their products are killing

World No Tobacco Day 2024 aims to protect children and adolescents from industry manipulation and prevent them from nicotine and tobacco use. This year’s campaign highlights the tactics used to hook our youth on nicotine and tobacco products i.e. e-cigarettes and vapes.

Adolescents are more likely to try tobacco if they lack the awareness of the tobacco industry tactics AND if they lack the skills to say NO to nicotine and tobacco. Adolescents may try tobacco or vapes as a result of peer pressure, advertising, or simply as a result of the lack of knowledge or skills to refuse it. We need to empower our youth to refuse being manipulated and join the tobacco-free generation. Tactics used include:

    • Over 15,000 flavours, most of which attract children and adolescents
    • Social media influencers
    • Sleek, cool, trendy designs
    • Products advertised near schools
    • Selling products at eye level for children
