Bereavement Service

Bereavement Service

The Bereavement Team provides support to people at a time of sadness and sometimes distress. The team offers a sensitive and empathetic service during the period following the death of a relative, friend or colleague.

A new, digital guidance document has been developed to support managers in the difficult task of leading and supporting their teams following the suspected suicide of a colleague.

Every death by suicide is a tragedy. It has been estimated that 135 people are affected every time someone takes their life. Suicide affects the whole of society – reaching families, communities, employment, health care, coroners and more.

Such events are profoundly distressing and can leave lasting impacts on individuals and workplace culture.

Effective postvention—providing timely, compassionate, and structured support after a suicide—is critical not only in helping staff process their grief but also in reducing the risk of further harm.

Developed by a multidisciplinary team with expertise in suicide and staff well-being, this document offers practical steps to help managers respond with sensitivity, foster open communication, and create a safe, supportive environment for their teams.

It also provides clear information on local support services available within the Belfast Trust locality to ensure staff can access help when they need it most.
