Tips for Weight Loss Success
Losing weight can feel like a challenge and it’s important to remember it won’t happen overnight.
Making small, long term changes to your diet and being more active is the best way to lose weight and keep it off.
If you are overweight you can get health benefits from losing just 5-10% of your body weight and keeping it off.
For example someone weighing 90kg will need to lose just 4.5kg – 9kg to achieve benefits.
Health Benefits
- Lowering high blood pressure
- Improved blood cholesterol levels
- Reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes and some types of cancers
- Ease lower back and joint pain
Personal Benefits
- Having more energy
- Feeling more comfortable in your clothes
- Feeling healthier
- Sleeping better.
How do I know if I need to
lose weight?
- Why not use the NHS Choices BMI healthy weight calculator to find out if you are overweight and what your target weight is.
- Your waist line is also important- if it’s too large your risk of health problems is higher.
See www.choosetolivebetter.com for more information on waist measurements.
What is the best way to
lose weight?
- Set realistic and achievable goals – aim for 1 to 2 lb per week.
- Eat regularly- skipping meals can lead to over eating later in the day.
- Eat a balanced diet – see Eat well for Health for more information.
- Keep active – for useful tips see B Active.
- Why not follow the 12 week NHS weight loss plan?
