Every October, people all over the world show their support for people affected by breast cancer. Breast cancer is always an important issue, but October is a great opportunity to raise awareness and get chatting about the importance of being breast aware
Breast cancer can affect all of us. Did you know that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women in Northern Ireland? Men can be affected too and it usually happens in men over 60, but can very
occasionally affect younger men. The risk of breast cancer increases with age, but it can occur at any age. Changes aren’t always just a lump. Breast awareness means knowing your own breasts and being aware of what changes are normal for you. ideally check once a month and don’t forget to check your nipples, under your armpits and around your collarbone too.

• If you notice a change or are worried about your breasts please contact your GP. If you are aged between 50 and 70 and are registered as a female with a GP, you will be invited to attend for breast screening every three years.
• If you are aged over 70, all you need to do is phone your local breast screening unit to make an appointment every three years.
• Many of you may have already received an invitation to attend breast screening recently.
• If you did not attend for any reason, you can still choose to get screened by contacting the local breast screening unit.
